Toxic chemicals are a major issue

Even though invisible and largely unnoticed, synthetic chemicals play an important part in our lives. Used as integral parts in millions of different manufacturing processes and everyday products, they make our lives easier and better. The downside is that a majority of these chemicals are toxic to health and the environment, and unfortunately legislation can’t keep up.

Making the grade

ChemScore looks at the 51 biggest chemical companies in the world, based on revenue, and ranks their performance in four different categories: the toxicity of their product portfolio, research & development of non-toxic chemicals, management & transparency and the number of controversies and scandals that the company has been involved in. The higher the score, the better the performance.
